Cross Country Bike Trip

In the spring of 1990, after graduating from college, my roomate and I set out to bicycle across the country.  As seniors in college, busy with finishing school, starting a career (in my case) and preparing for graduate school (in my roomates case), we found little time to train before the ride.  Nevertheless, we were both in reasonably good shape at the time and decided that we would simply get started and train along the way.

We chose a northerly route across the United States.  We also thought it wise to follow the prevailing winds and to travel from west to east.  With that in mind, we enlisted the family of a friend of ours who lived in Seattle to act as our starting point for the trip.  We disassembled and packaged our bicycles to be shipped via UPS to Seattle.  This seemed to be a safer and more cost effective way to get the bikes there, as we had heard some uncharitable stories of the airlines mishandling bicycles.

The plan worked well and the bikes were ready for us when we arrived in Seattle.  We spent a day as guests of our hosts, reassembling the bikes and exploring the area.  Then we pointed our bikes east and began our journey.

I may revisit this page to add more detail, but for the time being, I wanted to at least get the photos posted.  I finally scanned them in from the original prints after 20 years.  The quality of the photos isn’t great, but the story they tell are what is important.

Here are a few newspaper articles written about our trip along the way and when we got home:
